You’re overwhelmed at work. You have a ton of projects piling up at home, and your calendar is packed with overdue tasks. To make room for all of this stuff, you skip lunch, stop going to the gym, and forget about your social life entirely. When we’re stressed, self care is usually the first thing to go. And that only makes things worse.
So why is self-care not only important but critical to our physical and psychological well-being?
First, it prevents burnout. In this program I share about how I hit the "burnout wall" 3 times in my life before it finally sunk that I needed to reprioritize myself.
Second, it can take the edge off of mounting stress. Stress is cumulative, so we need ways to skim off the accruing effects of stress. Self-care is a way to do this.
Third, self-care brings clarity. When we're stressed or overwhelmed, there is a psychological impact to the stress-related hormones running through our body. Our heart rate increases, we may even go into fight-flight mode finding it hard to sit still or concentrate. We lose focus. Self-care helps us to restore the needed clarity that is eroded by stress and worry.
